Tengu Tots Class :

™(Children’s) Class: 4 – 7 years old. Much thought has been devoted to the development of our children’s program. Lessons that are both fun and challenging are used to develop respect, physical strength, balance, coodination, and cultivate self discipline while maintaining the younger child’s attention span. Games that reinforce class topics are physically and mentally challenging for the students and maintain the idea that training is fun! Tengu Tots are also given instruction in Aikijutsu techniques (used as a foundation art), traditional Saito martial dances (Ninpo forms) and physical and mental self- defense techniques.

Children are taught how not to become victims of abduction as well as dealing with playground confrontation. Tengu Tots receive instruction in brain development exercises that balance the right and left hemisphere’s of the brain. These exercises increase focus, attention, and concentration thereby enhancing the processes of learning.

Tengu Tots classes are offered on Monday through Thursday from 4:30 – 5:30 PM. Children may attend any two class periods offered during the week. For example: The Regular Schedule is Mon/Wed or Tue/Thurs. If your Tot has to miss a class then they may attend any of the other class days. This makes it easier for parents with busy schedules. Children may also earn Temple Awards in addition to Tots belt rankings for satisfactory completion of assigned exercises and dances as well as for attendance, citizenship, good conduct at home, at school and in recognition of a child’s all around good behavior.

The traditional drills and exercises of this art make it unnecessary for children to perform “sparring drills”. “Sparring”, as it is done in franchise “martial arts” schools, is counter productive in our view. It promotes aggression and/or “cocky” attitudes and does not reinforce the proper breathing, body movement or composure important to this art. This is one of the many reasons there is No Sparring or Tournament Play in this school.

The Tengu Tot Curriculum includes:

Ground Work: (Atemi/Ukemi) Brake falls, rolling, flipping, ground techniques, suwari waza (seated techniques).

Empty Hand Arts: (Tai Jutsu): punching, kicking, takedowns and locks, Aikijutsu principles, and the specialized arts of Shinkeido .

Traditional Dances: There are several Traditional Dances which are exclusive to Saito Ninjitsu. These rare and totally functional dances have many levels which begin as physical practice forms and at advanced levels become the keys to the true warrior spirit. Weapons Training: Tengu Tots learn the empty hand version of these forms.

Children’s Class:

8 – 15 years old.

Mon/Wed 5:30-7:00 PM
Tues/Thur 8:30-9:30 AM & 5:30- 7:00PM

Includes anti-abduction techniques and to a degree, the Adult Class curriculum. At age 15 your child can transfer to the Adult Ninjitsu Course and receive the more advanced training. We strive to instill those positive qualities and traits exhibited by the True Warrior. The traits of Confidence, Composure, Self Discipline, Respect, Citizenship, Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Weapons Training: The school teaches several classical weapons, such as nunchaku, sai, bo, tonfa and swordsmanship, but also many improvised and Family Specific weapons. We teach the rare art of Tengu Kenjutsu (double spinning swords) a trademark particular to the Saito Clan and found nowhere else in the world. Certainly these arts are offered only to those who have demonstrated the physical and emotional maturity to respond to the discipline of training. The decision to teach weapons to children under 18 years of age will be a joint one among the Chief Instructor and parents.

Additionally we do not “Spar” nor do we include Tournament Fighting as part of our curriculum and grading process. The traditional drills and exercises within this art make it unnecessary for to perform “sparring drills”. “Sparring”, as it is done in franchised “martial arts” schools, is counter productive and not realistic in our view. It promotes aggression and/or “cocky” attitudes and does not reinforce the proper breathing, body movement or composure important to this art and self-defense. This is one of the many reasons there is No Sparring or Tournament Play in this school.
